Frequently asked questions

Charters from Tróia and Setúbal — the practical answers.

Every charter is private, with a licensed captain. The detail below covers what we are most often asked before booking.

  1. Do I need a boat licence to charter from Tróia?
No. Every My Captain charter is fully crewed — a licensed captain is included on every boat, every day. You bring the day, we handle the boat.
  2. Where exactly do we leave from?
Tróia Marina, on the south side of the Sado estuary, opposite Setúbal. There is paid parking on the marina and a 20-minute Setúbal ferry crossing for guests arriving by car from Lisbon.
  3. What is the signature Tróia route?
Most full-day charters sail across to the Portinho da Arrábida natural park — Galapinhos, Galapos and Praia dos Coelhos — anchor for a swim and lunch, watch for the resident pod of bottlenose dolphins in the Sado estuary, and return into Tróia for the late afternoon.
  4. How long is a typical charter?
Half-day charters run four hours, full-day charters run eight. Sunset charters of two to three hours are available in summer. Multi-day cruises south to the Alentejo coast can be arranged on the larger motor yachts.
  5. Will we see dolphins?
The Sado estuary holds one of the only resident bottlenose dolphin populations in Europe — around 30 individuals. Most full-day Tróia charters cross their range. We cannot guarantee a sighting on any given day, but encounters are common.
  6. What is included in the price?
Captain, fuel for the published route, soft drinks and water, snorkelling and paddle-board kit on most boats, and full insurance. Catering and premium drinks are arranged on request — we work with a small list of trusted Setúbal kitchens.
  7. What happens if the weather is poor?
We monitor the forecast in the 48 hours before your charter. If conditions are unsafe or genuinely unpleasant, we reschedule at no cost. Light wind and a swell are part of the Atlantic — we will tell you honestly what the day will look like.
  8. How many guests can come?
The Tróia fleet ranges from a 9-metre Beneteau for groups of six, through the Fairline Targa 48 for ten, up to the Falcon 82 for eighteen. Tell us the group size and we will match the right boat.
  9. When is the best time of year for Tróia?
May to October. July and August are the warmest and the busiest — book at least two weeks ahead. June and September give you the same water temperature with quieter beaches.
  10. Can we run a corporate or family event on board?
Yes. The Falcon 82 and the larger Sunseekers carry up to 18 guests for a private event — birthday charters, company days and small weddings on the water. We can coordinate the catering, music and a photographer.
  11. How quickly do you reply to an enquiry?
Bruno typically replies on WhatsApp within an hour, between 09:00 and 22:00 Lisbon time. Email enquiries get a same-day response.
